Advani retains billiards crown

Pune, Jan 27 (IANS) Pankaj Advani of PSPB scored a 5-0 win over Balachandra Bhaskar of Karnataka to retain the men's billiards title in the Manisha National Billiards and Snooker Championship here on Friday.

Advani, a former World champion, was in supreme form, scoring a 151(151)-31, 152(59)-26, 153(151)-0, 150(150)-0, 150(62)-36 win over Bhaskar to claim his sixth national billiards title.

In the semifinals, Advani blanked Sourav Kothari 4-0 to set up a repeat final against Bhaskar who overcame Alok Kumar (PSPB) (150 (123)-30, 121 (102)-150 (102), 9-152 (113), 152-28, 19-151 (124), 151 (114)-118 (82), 150 (108)-103-(85). Kothari defeated Alok Kumar 2-1 in the play-off for third and fourth positions.

Meanwhile, Pune's Arantxa Sanchis won her maiden women's billiard title when she beat multiple champion Meenal Thakur of Mumbai 3-2 in a tight all-Maharashtra final on Thursday.

Sanchis set herself up for a double crown by making it to the quarterfinals of the women's snooker championship when she defeated seasoned Jagruti Patel 2-0 and was joined by Varsha Sanjeev, who won three titles last week in junior and sub-junior championships, as she beat Judy Walia 49-36, 67-31 in an all-Karnataka match.
