Riyadh: Cristiano Ronaldo watched from the sidelines as Al Nassr suffered their first defeat in the Asian Champions League this season. The Saudi giants were beaten 2-1 by Qatar's Al Sadd in a thrilling encounter.
The Portuguese superstar, who had scored crucial goals in recent matches, was rested for this game as Al Nassr had already secured their place in the knockout stages. However, the absence of Ronaldo couldn't prevent Al Nassr from a shock defeat.
Al Sadd took the lead in the 53rd minute through Akram Afif, who capitalized on a defensive error to score a solo goal. Al Nassr fought back and equalized in the 80th minute when Al Sadd defender Romain Saiss inadvertently deflected a cross into his own net.
However, Al Sadd secured a dramatic victory in the 99th minute when Adam Ounas converted a penalty.
With this defeat, Al Nassr remains third in their group, while Al Sadd advances to the knockout stage.
In another match, Al Ahli, led by English striker Ivan Toney, drew 2-2 with Iran's Esteghlal. Toney scored two penalties to keep Al Ahli at the top of their group.
