Union Health Secretary visits Life care Centre

Thiruvananthapuram, July 12 : Shri.Keshav Desiraju, Secretary (Health and Family Welfare) visited Lifecare Centre at Trivandrum Medical College today. The Life care Centre here is part of a pan-India intervention by HLL Life care limited to make healthcare products accessible and affordable to all sections.

This first-of-its kind centre has been supplying specialized medical equipments at discounts ranging from 10 to 60 percent. A retail centre for surgical implants, surgical consumables and lifesaving drugs, it has been serving patients by making available critical items at economical prices. HLL Life care Limited, Medical College Hospital and Government of Kerala are partners in this venture.

Life care Centres of HLL have demonstrated that it is possible to serve needs of patients by making available
affordable healthcare products in a hassle-free manner.” Welcoming the replication of Life care Centres to other medical colleges he added, “The centres have the potential for replication; it is for the State Government to take a Dr. M. Ayyappan, Chairman & Managing Director of HLL Life care Limited detailed the market interventions made by these Life care Centres on the occasion.

For example, the interlocking set used in thighbone surgeries costs around Rs 7,000 in the market, but it is priced at just Rs 2,200 at the Life care Centre. Likewise, the AMP implant, used in bipolar surgeries has a market price of Rs 4,000 but is available at the centre for Rs 1,700. In addition to subsidised services for the needy, the centre also provides cashless services to Rasthriya Swasthya Bima Yojana (RSBY) cardholders.

The Lifecare Centre at Medical College Hospital was launched in partnership with the hospital and Government of Kerala in October 2011. The Life care centre at the Regional Institute of Ophthalmology here supplies ophthalmic products, including spectacles, lenses and frames at discount rates ranging from 10 to 60 percent.

HLL has Life care Centres at General Hospital, Pathanamthitta and District Hospital Vadakara in Kerala and SCB Medical College, Cuttack and Burla Medical College in Odisha. Lifecare Centres at SVIMS-Tirupati, Andhra Pradesh and Government Taluk Hospital at Koyilandi in Kozhikode district are some recent additions.

Over 50,000 patients have availed the service of various Lifecare Centres in the country so far. HLL will soon open Life care Centres at Medical College Hospital at Berhampur, Odisha and NIMHANS, Bangalore. Plans are also on to set up more such centres in different parts of the country in the coming years.
