IOC to meet funds to renovate Govinda Pai memorial building: Moily

MANJESHWARAM : The residential premises of late
Rashtrakavi Manjeshwara Govinda Pai would shortly get facelift and
would emerge as a vibrant cultural and literary centre as Union
Minister of Petroleum M. Veerappa Moily offered to fully meet
financial assistance for the project.

The Indian Oil Corporation (IOC) foundation would meet the entireexpense to renovate the Govinda Pai Memorial building into a museum, a
library and an auditorium as part of the long cherished ‘Gulivindu’
project that aims to develop his ancestral house here into a national
level centre of literature, culture and research to enrich and promote
the language studies, Mr. Moily said.

Mr. Moily was speaking after opening the guest house ‘Vaishakhi’,
built at cost of around Rs. 14 lakhs sanctioned by C. H. Kunhambu,
former Manjeshwaram MLA, from his local area development (LAD) fund
and inaugurating construction works of the second auditorium ‘Saketha’
at the residential premises where the late literary genius penned his
works.

The project works would be completed by March next year would be
readyh for opened on March 23, the birth anniversary day of the late
poet, who was born in 1883 and passed away on September 6, 1963.

The IOC foundation has so far allocated Rs. 26 crore to provide
facelift works of the major art and museusm in states like Orissa,
Madhya Pradesh and Karnataka and has no hesitation in extending help
to the Govinda Pai memorial building to turn it as a national level
centre for literature, c utlre and research, the Petroeum Minister
said.

Mr. Moily stressed the need to foster literature to help the future
generation lead a virtuous life.

“One could achieve any level of professional excellence. But it is the
language that flourishes the personality within, that helps a person
lead a virtuous and meaningful life, could be achieved only if one
accorded equal importance to the language studies”, he said.

The lte poet’s passion for languages was confined not just to Kannada.
Malayalam or English, but for majority of Indian languages and he
should be remembered for this literary contribution by the entire
nation”, he said.

The district administration should be prepared to hold a exhaustive
language workshop in another three months by involving leading
literary luminaries of both Karnataka and Kerala.

P, Karunkaran, MP, addressing the function as chief guest expressed
regret for commencing the renovation works of the memorial building
despite both Kerala and Karnataka sanctioning Rs. 25 lakh each for the
project.

He said he would now offer assistance from his LAF fimd to build a
compound wall to the sprawling complex.

Local MLA P. B. Abdul Razka, Kasaragod MLA N. A. Nellikkunnu, District
Panchayat President P. P. Shyamala Devi, Smaraka Samithi Secretary B,
V, Kakkillaya also addressed at the function.
