Alappuzha: A tragic road accident claimed the lives of five young MBBS students near Alappuzha, Kerala. The overcrowded car, carrying 11 passengers, skidded and collided with a Kerala State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) bus on Monday night. According to the Regional Transport Officer (RTO), the primary cause of the accident was the overcrowding of the vehicle. The car, designed to accommodate only seven passengers, was carrying four additional passengers, which likely affected the vehicle's handling and braking capabilities. Other factors contributing to the accident include the driver's inexperience (he was 18 years old and had only been driving for five months), poor road conditions due to wet weather, and the vehicle's age and lack of proper maintenance. The CM asked all govt agencies to engage in rescue operations using all government facilities.  The CM has deputed A C Moideen, minister for local bodies, to coordinate the rescue operations. AC Moideen has already left for Karipur from Thrisur. CM also has deputed an IG of Police to oversee the rescue operation. Fire and Rescue teams of two district's also have been engaged. Health authorities have been instructed to provide all possible medical aid to save lives of victims. American Express Co will cut more than 4,000 jobs this year, an executive said, after the credit card company also reported higher quarterly expenses and provisions for bad loans. The planned redundancies, from a workforce of nearly 63,000, contributed to a $313 million pre-tax restructuring charge taken by the world's largest credit card issuer during the fourth quarter. The company's shares fell 2.3 percent to $85.62 after the bell. American Express, which in recent years has been reining in costs to counter sluggish revenue growth, said expenses rose 3.5 percent to $3.60 billion in the fourth quarter, driven mainly bymarketing costs and salaries. Total provisions for loan losses increased 21.5 percent to $582 million. Another credit card issuer, Discover Financial Services Inc, reported a 33 percent drop in quarterly profit as it set aside more money to cover bad loans. The job cuts announced by American Express will take place in the United States and abroad.

Islamabad, July 17 (IANS) At least eight people were killed and dozens injured when a bus with some 70 passengers on board fell into a ravine near Pakistan's capital Islamabad Tuesday morning, a media report said. A number of people were trapped inside the bus, reported Xinhua citing a TV channel.

Mumbai, July 2 (IANS) A 70-year-old woman was killed when she was knocked down by a Land Cruiser owned by Bollywood actor-filmmaker Arbaaz Khan, police here said Monday. The incident occurred around 11 p.m. Sunday near St. Andrew's Church when the vehicle was headed towards the home of the Khans at Bandstand. The woman has been identified as Chandra Bala, police said. She was rushed to the Bhabha Hospital by a police constable and some autorickshaw drivers in the vicinity but died from her injuries. The car was being driven by Dhananjay Pimpale. A top police official supervising the investigation said Pimpale came and reported the accident case to the police station shortly afterwards. "We have recorded his statement and also the statements of two eyewitnesses who were present at the scene of the accident. Siliguri, June 14 (IANS) One person was injured and seven others were missing after the car they were travelling in fell into the Teesta river in Kalimpong of West Bengal's Darjeeling district Thursday, police said. The car skidded into the river at Kirne near West Bengal's border with Sikkim. "The occupants were travelling from Jorethang in south Sikkim to Gangtok," chief of Kalimpong police station Prasad Pradhan said. An injured passenger was rescued and admitted to a nursing home, he added. "Police of both the states have been conducting an intense search in the river for the victims. All nearby police stations have been alerted," Pradhan said.

Lucknow, May 25 (IANS) Uttar Pradesh will set up control rooms on national and state highways to provide emergency services to accident victims in district-level hospitals across the state, officials said. The decision was taken in a meeting presided over by state Chief Secretary Jawed Usmani Thursday. Orders have been issued to publicise the toll-free phone numbers of control rooms. The state government has also ordered all district magistrates and local police officials to ensure speedy treatment and emergency care to road accident victims. The emergency services will be monitored by a committee comprising the district magistrate, the chief medical officer and the road transport officer. Ambulances will be deployed in three shifts of eight hours each on all major highways. The arrangement and maintenance of the ambulances will be done by the health department, officials said. In case of a major accident, cranes will be pressed into service to clear traffic. 

Geneva, March 14 (IANS) A bus accident in Switzerland left 22 children and six adults dead, police said Wednesday. All 28 are Belgian tourists. The bus accident occurred in southwest Switzerland Tuesday night, Swiss police said. \The victims comprised six adults and 22 children, reported Xinhua. Twenty-four people were injured in the accident when they were on their way back home. The accident happened around 9.15 p.m. in a tunnel near Sierre in the Swiss canton of Valais. Police said the bus apparently struck the left side of the tunnel, veered right and crashed into an emergency lane inside the tunnel. Ambulances and helicopters rushed to the spot to help the injured. A telephone hotline was set up to connect Belgium and Switzerland for families of the victims.

Osmanabad (Maharashtra), Feb 2 (IANS) At least four passengers were killed when an ambulance from Karnataka carrying a body rammed into a state transport bus near Vadgaon in this district early Thursday, police said. The accident took place on the busy Solapur-Osmanabad highway when the ambulance was proceeding to Aurangabad, a police officer said. Eleven injured passengers of the bus, travelling from Osmanabad to Satara, have been admitted to the civil hospital in Osmanabad district, 465 km from Mumbai. The condition of one is critical.
